Simpson, began her career on radio at WCFL in Chicago, Illinois, after graduating from the University of Michigan and was later hired at WBBM. She later moved to television at Chicago’s WMAQ and to NBC News in 1975, becoming the first African-American woman to anchor a major network newscast.
Simpson was appointed as a Washington, D.C. correspondent for the NBC Nightly News in 1974.
She later in 1982, joined ABC News as a correspondent and covered then-Vice President George H.W. Bush on his domestic and foreign trips. She was later appointed as an anchor for the weekend edition of World News Tonight from 1988 until October 2003.
When she moderated the debate held between George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot, at Richmond, Virginia, in 1992, she became the first woman of color to moderate a presidential debate. That same year she received the Journalist of the Year Award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
Simpson currently serves in the Advisory Council at the International Women’s Media Foundation.
In 2006, she retired from ABC News to begin teaching journalism at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts.
